Her career began in a folk group, The Wind in the Willows, before joining a female trio, The Stilettos, in the early 1970s. The backing group included her boyfriend, guitarist Chris Stein, with whom she will form Blondie in the mid-1970s. The name of the group would come from the whistles of the men on the passage of Debbie. Blondie performed regularly at Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s (she discovered the Fleshtones) in New York City before achieving international commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly with the songs Heart of Glass (1978) and Call Me (1980). Still active, Debbie Harry worked in 2006 with Moby and released a brand new album in the fall of 2007, Necessary Evil.
She also plays in several films, such as Videodrome by David Cronenberg, Hairspray by John Waters, or Ma vie sans moi by Isabel Coixet.
At the end of 2010, she released a brand new Blondie album called Panic of Girls.
In 2013, she sang a duet with Étienne Daho on L’Étrangère, a song from the album Les Chansons de l’Innocence Reundée.
In 2014, Debbie Harry announced that she was bisexual.
In 2017, she sang with Future Islands on the album The Far Field the song Shadows.
